Bee Pollen for Treating Allergies
Holistic experts praise bee pollen, a homeopathic substance rich in nutrients and minerals. In addition to its immune-boosting qualities, bee pollen also may be an effective treatment for people with allergies like hay fever. If you suffer from symptoms of allergies, including runny nose, itchy eyes or constant wheezing, taking bee pollen orally every day may provide some relief. Consult a physician before starting this regimen.-
Allergy Treatment With Bee Pollen
-
Dr. Theodore Cherbuliez, a physician in Scarsdale, New York, and the president of the American Apitherapy Society, says bee pollen may be used to treat patients who suffer from allergies. The concept is similar to immunizations. Dr. Cherbuliez explains that consuming small amounts of bee pollen can help build up the body's immunity to allergens, and protect the patient from a reaction.
Availability of Bee Pollen
-
Bee pollen is available in most health food stores nationwide, and is often sold in its natural state of orange, yellow and brown granules. People are advised to consume 1 tbsp. of pollen a day, which may be spread on toast, diluted in tea or consumed directly. Dr. Cherbuliez recommends first soaking the pollen in water or orange juice for 12 hours to break down its shells and increase its absorption rate. It is estimated that the body can absorb only 2 percent to 7 percent of regular pollen. After soaking, Dr. Cherbuliez says nearly the body can absorb 90 percent of the pollen.
When to Contact a Physician
-
When beginning a daily regimen of bee pollen, pay careful attention to your body's reactions. Bee pollen has caused serious adverse reactions in some people, including life-threatening conditions and anaphylactic shock. In some cases, people have experienced swelling in the throat that inhibits breathing. Avoid taking bee pollen if you have asthma or a history of anaphylactic reactions, and carefully monitor any swelling or itching. Discontinue use if allergic symptoms increase with daily consumption.
