Alternative Treatments for Myelofibrosis

Myelofibrosis is a disorder in which bone marrow develops in abnormal areas. The bone marrow is scarred (fibrosis) and causes anemia, enlarged spleen, excess platelets and an overproduction of red blood cells in the spleen and liver. There is no cure for myelofibrosis, though chemotherapy can slow the progression. Alternative treatments can address symptoms of myelofibrosis and make the patient more comfortable.
  1. Herbs For Anemia

    • Anemia is the primary sign of myleofibrosis in its early stages. Iron, folic acid and vitamin B12 can help counter anemia. Beneficial herbs for anemia include dong quai, chives, gentian and dandelion root, which are all rich in vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C and iron. Genitan is popular in Europe as a treatment for anemia. Eat fresh chives, but the other herbs can be obtained in a capsule, tea or tincture.

    Vitamins

    • A study conducted by Pathology (Hematology Division), College of Medicine, King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, implicated vitamin D deficiency as a cause for myelofibrosis. It is important to get enough vitamin D to prevent myelofibrosis, or to help manage subsequent conditions resulting from myelofibrosis, such as anemia and thrombocytopenia. Vitamins A and K both enhance the efficacy of chemotherapy and can contribute to a longer lifespan. Vitamin A inhibits the growth of cancer cells. Vitamin K can help minimize the toxic effects of chemotherapy and increase survival rates. Vitamin K is particularly useful when combined with the chemotherapy drug doxorubicin.

    Acupuncture, Acupressure and Others

    • Chemotherapy is a major component of myelofibrosis treatment but can cause extreme side effects, such as diarrhea, nausea and fatigue. Alternative treatments can help manage the side effects. Acupressure and acupuncture can both help with nausea and headaches. Siberian ginseng boosts energy levels. Olive leaf extract has anti-inflammatory properties for pain and also strengthens the immune system. Ginger has antiemetic properties. Make ginger tea with fresh or dried ginger to settle your stomach. Fenugreek is beneficial to prevent diarrhea and also soothes the intestinal tract. Most alternative treatments are complementary with conventional treatments, but make sure your doctor knows which herbs you are using.
