Stomach Ache Home Remedy

Stomach aches seem to strike at the worst time. They are usually temporary and accompanied by some other ailment like diarrhea. These can be caused by something that you ate or even the stomach flu. Chronic stomach aches are caused by more serious issues. If you suffer from an ongoing stomach ache, consult your care provider. Stomach aches caused by ulcers and other serious conditions need to be medically treated. Less serious stomach aches can by remedied with self-care treatments.
  1. Diet

    • Change your diet while suffering from a stomach ache. Drink non-caffeinated soda like ginger ale or lemon-lime to settle a stomach ache. Drink fruit juice if the stomach ache is accompanied by diarrhea or vomiting. Diarrhea and vomiting cause the body to loose potassium and other nutrients that fruit juice can add back into the body. Do not drink milk since it is hard to digest. Dairy products can also be a main cause of stomach aches.

    Other Changes

    • Avoid coffee when suffering from a stomach ache. Even decaffeinated coffee can aggravate a stomach ache. Alcohol and smoking irritate the stomach lining and can make a stomach ache worse. It is best to avoid these items along with red pepper, black pepper, fried foods and high fat foods. Choose foods that are easy to digest like whole grain breads and lean meats. Eat in moderation since stuffing yourself full at this time can intensify your stomach ache.

    Herbal Teas

    • Peppermint, chamomile and ginger tea are all soothing to a stomach ache. Pour 1 cup of boiling water over five leaves of fresh mint. Allow leaves to steep for five minutes. Add a teaspoon of honey or lemon to your mint tea. Sip your tea to ease your stomach ache.

    Children's Remedy

    • One gentle remedy for a stomach ache is lime or lemon sherbet in a glass with some lemon-lime soda poured over the top. This is a sweet and soothing remedy for a child with a stomach ache. This helps to settle the stomach. It also puts potassium and other nutrients back into the body. A child with a stomach ache will not eat so this remedy will add calories to her diet.

    Heat

    • Sometimes a stomach ache will benefit from a warm heating pad. Lie on your back and place the heating pad on your stomach. Do not lie on the heating pad since this may cause the heating pad to over heat and burn your skin. Another way is to make a heat pack. Take a long sock and fill it with uncooked rice. Tie a knot in the open end so the rice will not escape. Microwave the sock for about 1 minute or until warm. Check the temperature of the heat pack with your hand to make sure you do not have it too hot. If it is too hot then let it cool off. Lay the heat pack on your stomach.
