Herbs to Reduce Swelling

Swelling is the enlargement of body parts due to fluid buildup in tissues. It can occur throughout the body or be limited to a specific area. The extra fluid can cause a rapid increase in weight over a short time period.
  1. Herbs

    • Ginger has anti inflammatory properties and is used to treat swelling. The pure form is recommended and can be purchased in health stores. Aloe contains bradykininase, an enzyme that helps decrease swelling. Aloe can be ingested or applied directly to the affected areas.

Corn silk is an effective diuretic. Two oz. of dry corn silk effectively gets rid of excess fluid. The fresh roots, flowers and leaves of dandelion can be eaten or brewed for tea. Multiflora rose is a dried herb also made as tea. Both of these herbs have been effective in reducing swelling.

Mangosteen is a fruit with the ability to reduce inflammation. Licorice is an anti allergic herb with swelling-reduction properties. Bromelain is another herb that has multiple anti inflammatory components. Echinacea promotes the regeneration of bodily tissues and reduces inflammation. It can be added to herbal teas to enhance adrenal cortex hormones.

    Plant Sources

    • There are other various plant chemicals found in herbal sources that effectively control inflammation. Omega 3 essential oils are plant chemicals that also reduce inflammation. Phytochemicals (carotenoids and catechins) that belong to the bioflavonoid family also possess properties to aid in reducing swelling. Spices such as red pepper, turmeric, and curcumin influence acid metabolism and enzyme secretion. This is effective in controlling the release of pro inflammatory mediators. Other influential herbs include garlic, panax ginseng and milk thistle.
