Herbal or Other Treatments for Heart Palpatations

Heart palpitations are characterized by the beating of the heart in a rapid or abnormal fashion. It can be a common symptom of heart problems, damage from past heart attacks, overuse of stimulants or nervousness and stress. Sometimes nervous and adrenal systems that are weak or compromised experience heart palpitations. To treat heart palpitations, there are several easy things to do and some things to avoid.
  1. Foods and Drugs to Avoid

    • To treat heart palpitations take a close look at all foods and drugs you consume or use. Eliminate stimulants like coffee, cola, tea and reduce your use of bronchial inhalers. Bronchial inhalers are known to increase heart rates. Sugar ingestion should also be reduced, as excess consumption of sugar can cause aggravation to the heart and cause palpitations. Simple sugars like those contained in cookies, cakes, ice cream, fruit juice and other foods, should be stricken from the diet. Honey and maple syrup should also be eliminated from the diet.

    Herbs and Foods

    • Drink organic grape juice to reduce heart palpitations associated with hot flashes and night sweats. Also, just eat grapes by themselves to enjoy their mineral rich nutrition.

Take a tincture of 25 drops of black haw root bark, which supplies phytosterols, to help with heart palpitations. You may also make an infusion tea with black haw root bark, and drink to relieve symptoms. This acts as an antispasmodic to relax the heart muscle.

Drink valerian root tea to calm a racing heart. This is readily available at your health food store. Likewise, drink ginger tea for the same effect.

    Vitamins and Supplements

    • Take vitamin E at 200 to 1200 IU's daily to relieve heart palpitations. Vitamin E is known to lower the risk of heart attack by 36 percent in women who are menopausal and postmenopausal. Do not take vitamin E if you have diabetes, high blood pressure or are taking blood thinners.

Take magnesium and calcium to help prevent heart palpitations. Take between meals to avoid stomach upset.

Drink plenty of water to relieve heart palpitations. Being dehydrated adds stress to the body. Make sure to drink at least six to eight glasses per day. Water also will ease hot flashes if you are in menopause.

Consult your physician if you are concerned about your heart palpitations. Heart palpitations can be a sign of a more serious condition.
