Bromelain Treatment
Bromelain is a protein-digesting enzyme that is found in pineapple juice and in the core of pineapple plants. The bioactive ingredient was first isolated in 1891 and was introduced as a therapeutic treatment supplement in 1957. It is primarily produced in Japan, Hawaii, and Taiwan where most of the research on bromelain was done early on. These promising studies prompted European researchers to begin their own studies.-
Research
-
Germany has done extensive research on bromelain's benefits in regard to cancer tumors and other malignant diseases. Bromelain was given for 10 days to 16 breast cancer patients with a daily dose of 3000 F.I.P. units. It is approved by the German Commission E in the treatment of inflammation following surgery, particularly sinus surgery where there is a lot of swelling. Bromelain is active both in the acid environment of the stomach and the alkaline environment of the small intestine, so for a person who does not digest food properly bromelain can be very beneficial. It is available in tablet and capsule form. Bromelain has also shown promise in the treatment of problems resulting from inflammation such as pain, numbness, tingling, aching and carpal tunnel syndrome. Some treatment centers have applied it to third-degree burns and it also seems to work well on insect stings. Early research shows bromelain can kill viruses and bacteria.
A few studies have show the benefits of bromelain as a natural anti-inflammatory with analgesic properties to help to reduce symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis at dosages of 200 to 400 mg per day.
Cautions
-
Bromelain may increase the absorption of various drugs, particularly antibiotics such as amoxicillin and tetracycline. If you are taking blood thinners such as coumadin or heparin, or muscle relaxers such as benzodiazepines, then bromelain might intensify their effect.
Bromelain should not be taken by children, pregnant women, or anyone with bleeding disorders, liver or kidney diseases, high blood pressure or an allergy to pineapple.
Recommended Doses
-
The German Commission E recommends 80 - 320 mg two to three times per day. For specific conditions higher doses may be prescribed:
* Digestive aid: 500 mg per day in divided doses with meals
* Injuries: 500 mg four times a day on an empty stomach
* Arthritis: 500 - 2,000 mg a day in two divided doses
