Herbal Relief for Hemorrhoids

There are four herbs that can be used to naturally treat hemorrhoids. However, they should be used only long enough to give you relief, but no longer. This way, you will still enjoy relief if you need to use them in the future. As they are dried herbs, they can be kept safely stored in a dry location for many months.
  1. Comfrey Root Powder

    • This powder is from a root that is rich in the substance allantoin, which has anti-inflammatory properties and also stimulates the creation of new skin. External hemorrhoids may shrink and retract if treated with comfrey. Make a paste of the powder with either olive, flaxseed or fish oil. Apply the paste overnight and wash it off in the morning. The fresh leaves or roots are the best to use for this application, but you can get dried versions from health food or herb stores. If you buy the whole, dried leaves, grind them up in a coffee grinder or herb mill and then create your paste from that.

    Gotu Kola

    • This Indian herb is also a hemorrhoid remedy. An extract with 70 percent triterpenic acid is best. For good results, take three 30 mg capsules three times a day. The gotu kola herb reduces swelling, pain and the sensation of heaviness from hemorrhoids.

    Horse Chestnut

    • This substance comes from tree bark and has been found useful in the treatment of hemorrhoids. Aesculin and aescin are the main chemical components which strengthen your blood vessels and help reduce hemorrhoids in size. They reduce inflamed areas as well. Make a tea and apply to affected areas. Do not drink the tea, however, as it has tannin, which causes constipation and tightening of mucous and tissue areas. You can also mix it with oil and apply the paste externally.

    Plantain Herb

    • This herb contains allantoin, like comfrey root powder. Use it the same way by mixing with an oil and applying it to the affected area. Equal parts of both comfrey powder and plantain can be mixed and used as well. Use a coffee grinder or herb mill to crush plantain into a powder.
All four of these herbs are available at most herb or supplement stores.
