Organic Treatment for Pinched Nerves

A pinched nerve results from excess pressure. The cause may stem from surrounding tissue, such as muscles, tendons or bones. Symptoms include pain, numbness or an uncomfortable tingling sensation. While in severe cases, pinched nerves require medical attention, you can often relieve the symptoms with home remedies.
  1. Essential Oil Massage

    • Pinched nerves in the back, shoulders and wrists often occur when muscles tighten around the nerve, disrupting its ability to function. By gently massaging oils into surrounding areas, tight muscles will begin to loosen, easing the pressure. Never vigorously massage a pinched nerve, as this can cause further damage and pain.

Mix four drops of chamomile oil, three drops of marjoram oil and two drops of lavender oil into one ounce of St. John's Wort oil. Stir the mixture for two minutes to ensure the oils are properly mixed together. Dip both hands into warm water and then place them into the essential oil mix. Slowly massage muscles surrounding the pinched nerve, spending 10 minutes in one spot before moving toward the main area of pain. Gently massage the area up to two times per day; if the condition worsens, immediately contact a medical professional.

    Flax Seed Oil

    • Flax seed oil, which is obtained from the flax plant, contains fatty acids that help reduce inflammation within joints and muscles, according to the University of Maryland's Medical Center. Inflammation of joints can cause a nerve to be pinched, which can lead to extreme discomfort and pain.

Take two tablespoons of flax seed oil per day followed by six ounces of cold water. The best time is just before going to bed. Note: Before starting a dietary supplement program, consult a physician to ensure it does not react with other medications or medical conditions.

    Anti-Inflammatory Diet

    • Inflammation within the muscles or joints is a common reason for pinched nerves. While the cause may be an infection, the inflammation can be reduced or eliminated with dietary changes. Avoid foods that have been processed or fried as well as all those containing white flour. Reduce consumption of red meat and sugar. Eat plenty of leafy green vegetables such as broccoli, turnip greens and kelp, as well as brightly colored fruits. Drink at least 10 eight-ounce glasses of water per day to keep muscles and joints hydrated. Always consult a doctor before altering your diet plan to ensure its safety.
