White Willow Bark for Fibromyalgia Muscle Pain

White willow bark can be helpful in treating some of the symptoms associated with fibromyalgia, such as fever and muscle pain. White willow bark is an herbal supplement that has been shown to be as effective as aspirin, with few if any side effects, in various pain and inflammatory-related ailments. It also has been shown to be more effective than a placebo in several double-blind studies.
  1. Function

    • People who suffer from fibromyalgia often experience widespread pain and muscle weakness. White willow bark, which contains salicylic acid, or salicin, the active ingredient in aspirin, can help reduce fever and muscle pain caused by the disease.

    Indication

    • White willow bark is gathered from the bark of white willow trees, which are native to North America, Europe and Asia. White willow bark also is used to treat menstrual cramping, flu symptoms and bursitis.

    Dosage

    • When using it as a tea, add two teaspoons of white willow bark to eight ounces of water, simmer for 10 minutes, then steep for 30 minutes. Drink up to four cups of tea daily to treat fibromyalgia. In capsule form, take 60 to 240 milligrams daily.

    Side Effects

    • The side effects of white willow bark include nausea and ulcers because of the presence of salicylic acid.

    Warning

    • White willow bark may interact with prescription drugs used to treat fibromyalgia. Talk with your doctor before using white willow bark to relieve fibromyalgia symptoms if you are, or think you might be, pregnant. White willow bark is not recommended for children.
