Natural Cures for Enlarged Prostate Symptoms

Some in the conventional medicine world today claim that benign prostatic hyperplasia---otherwise known as prostate enlargement---is unpreventable and a common symptom of male aging. However, others in the medical science field feel that while you may not be able to stop it from coming on, you can treat it. And luckily there are some treatments that are natural and have proven effective in medically accepted, scientific studies.
  1. Saw Palmetto

    • Saw palmetto is made of the ripened berries of the dwarf palm, which grows in the United States, and works by preventing production of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and reducing estrogen levels, which in turn help rid the body of DHT. In one study, subjects who took saw palmetto reported symptomatic improvement equal to or better than those taking prescription drugs tamsulosin and finasteride.
Saw palmetto does not require a prescription, has few known side effects and costs far less than prescription drugs. However, one should still consult a physician before using it.

    Pygeum Africanum

    • The extract of the bark of an African plum tree has been shown to be effective in 18 different clinical studies. Much like saw palmetto, pygeum reduced DHT levels. Studies also showed that it had a strong effect on increasing urine flow, with patients trying pygeum experiencing less urine remaining in their bladders.

    Cernilton and Beta-Sitosterol

    • Cernilton, an extract of rye grass pollen, contains hydroxamic acid, which helps prevent the growth of prostate cells. While research is inconclusive, scientists believe cernilton may also inhibit certain hormones that cause prostate inflammation.
Patients taking beta-sitosterol have reported reductions in the urge to urinate. And while it is a natural extract from grains and legumes, including rice, corn, soybeans and peanuts, how it effects the prostate isn't completely understood. Researchers speculate that because it reduces cholesterol and has anti-inflammatory properties it may alleviate BPH sypmtoms.
