Topical Herbs for Hemorrhoids

The itchy, painful and swollen veins in the anal canal---better known as hemorrhoids---are a common problem. Fortunately, they are usually not serious. But sufferers do want relief from the unpleasant symptoms, and there are a number of safe, effective topical herbal solutions for this unpleasant condition.
  1. Witch Hazel

    • Witch Hazel is found in many over-the-counter hemorrhoid wipes. Available as a lotion or cream, it is a mild astringent.

    Aloe Vera

    • Aloe vera, popular for burns and other skin injuries, can cool the burn of hemorrhoids. Apply raw gel directly to inflamed tissues.

    Calendula

    • Calendula is usually prepared as a cream. It has anti-inflammatory properties and is very soothing to irritated skin.

    Tea Tree Oil

    • Tea Tree Oil is used as an antiseptic, but it may relieve the pain of hemorrhoids. In addition to its antiseptic qualities, the oil has antifungal and antiviral properties. It also stimulates the immune system.

    Butcher's Broom

    • Usually taken as a tea, Butcher's Broom compresses can also be used to relieve hemorrhoid symptoms. It contains a compound called ruscogen, which shrinks swollen tissue.

    St. Johns Wort Oil

    • Oil of St. Johns Wort is often sold as a cream. Its active ingredient, hypericin, may have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects.
