Household Remedies for Sinus Infections
Sinuses are cavities in bones in the face (nose, eyes and cheeks). Normally, a protective mucus lines these cavities, filtering and moistening air that is inhaled. Infection, however, can occur when the sinuses don't drain properly. Called sinusitis, sinus infections can be painful. Home remedies often can give relief and speed recovery.-
Inhale Steam
-
Breathing in steam though the nose can give some immediate pain relief. Clogged sinuses can be cleared by the steam's moist heat. Pour hot water into a bowl and inhale the steam as often as needed (use caution with hot water). In a hot shower, let the water run over the forehead and nose. Blow your nose to clear the nasal passages.
Drink Plenty of Fluids
-
Drinking lots of water helps thin mucus so it will drain easier (the body naturally produces mucus). Staying well hydrated also helps the immune system stay at its peak. Drink 10 8-ounce glasses of water during the day. Increase the intake of other fluids, including broths (mothers are wise to give chicken soup to their ill children), apple cider vinegar and teas (elderflower tea is especially recommended as it can thin mucus). Drinking fluids, especially water, also helps detoxify the body.
Eat Light
-
During a sinus infection, eat less solid foods as you increase drinking fluids. Once the symptoms begin to subside, slowly eat more solid foods. Start with foods that are less likely to produce mucus. These foods include nuts, seeds, whole grains, fruit and vegetables. Add cayenne pepper, onions or horseradish to foods. These will help drain mucus. Eating flaxseeds or flaxseed oil can reduce sinus inflammation.
Foods to Avoid
-
One of the major causes of sinus infection is an allergy to certain foods. Common allergies involve dairy products, eggs, wheat, chicken, duck, corn, bananas, peanuts, chocolate, refined white flour, and fried and processed foods. If a food allergy is suspected, try eliminating these foods, then slowly reintroduce them into the diet. Avoid alcohol and salt as they can dehydrate sinuses and increase inflammation.
If the Condition Persists
-
If after several weeks, the condition continues, even after trying these home remedies, or if the pain is severe, consult a physician.
