Herbal Rosacea Treatment

A chronic skin disease that affects an estimated 14 million Americans, rosacea causes redness and swelling, particularly on the face. It can affect the scalp, neck, ears, chest, back, and even the eyes. Those who suffer from rosacea may have a tendency to flush or blush easily. Adults between the ages of 30 and 60 are most likely to suffer from rosacea, and women are more susceptible than men. Patients wishing to avoid prescription medicines for rosacea may find herbal treatments to be beneficial. Many different herbal remedies can provide relief for rosacea and other skin conditions, often due to their anti-inflammatory properties.
  1. Burdock root

    • Native to Asia and Europe, burdock is a plant that is related to the sunflower. Its root is used in many herbal preparations. Burdock is believed to be a blood purifier that helps the body eliminate waste products and remove toxins from the bloodstream. Burdock helps keep the skin clear and healthy and has been traditionally used in the treatment of skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea. Some Native American tribes used burdock to treat skin sores. When taken internally, burdock can help relieve skin conditions and acts as an anti-inflammatory. Burdock can be taken in capsule form or made into an infusion for drinking.

    Licorice

    • Used for centuries to treat coughs, colds, and digestive issues, licorice is an effective anti-inflammatory and moisturizer that also helps brighten the skin. The glycyrrhizinic acid in licorice can help relieve skin conditions such as rosacea and dermatitis. Licorice can be taken internally or used topically. For a soothing mask that reduces redness, mix licorice powder with aloe vera gel and leave it on the skin for ten minutes.

    Feverfew

    • Another herb that is beneficial in treating skin conditions such as psoriasis and rosacea, feverfew inhibits the body's production of prostaglandin, a chemical that contributes to inflammation. Feverfew is used as an ingredient in some topical rosacea treatments such as Aveeno Ultra-Calming Moisturizer, which was designed to reduce redness and soothe irritated skin. Feverfew can also be taken internally in capsule form or as a tonic.

    Evening Primrose

    • Used by Native Americans as a painkiller and asthma treatment, evening primrose is an anti-inflammatory that can soothe skin rashes, heal wounds, and provide relief for rosacea, psoriasis, and eczema. Evening primrose is high in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), a fatty acid that has numerous health benefits. Evening primrose oil can be applied directly to the skin to help repair and improve skin irritations. It can also be taken internally. Excessive use may cause oily skin and should not be taken by anyone who suffers from seizure disorders.

    Tea Tree Oil

    • Native to Australia, the Tea Tree has been long prized by the Aboriginal people for its healing properties. Tea tee oil can be used to treat wounds and infections; it is antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-microbial, antiseptic, and antiviral. Tea tee oil as a topical treatment works best at low concentrations and can be effective in treating both rosacea and acne. Use care when applying Tea tee oil to the skin, as too much can cause redness, blistering, over drying, or itching.
