Information on Arniflora Arnica Gel

Arniflora arnica gel is a topical gel that is based on the actions of the herb Arnica montana. Arnica montana is used in traditional and homeopathic systems of alternative medicine to treat bruises, cuts, swelling and general inflammation and to reduce soreness. Arniflora arnica gel contains 8 percent Arnica montana extract in a base of witch hazel, which is known for its astringent effects, and is intended for external, topical uses. Arniflora arnica gel is one of the many topical arnica-based formulas that are available on the market.
  1. History

    • Arnica montana is a flowering plant in the sunflower family that is native throughout Europe, although it now grows across North America as well. Arnica montana has long been used in its native countries as a traditional herbal remedy, and other species of arnica, including A. fulgens and A. sororia, have been documented for similar uses by Native Americans in their native habitats.

    Uses

    • According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, Arnica montana is used for bruises, muscle aches, wound healing, sprains, phlebitis, rheumatic conditions, insect bites and swelling due to injury. Homeopaths use Arnica montana externally as well as internally for trauma and other physical injury conditions.

    Studies

    • A study published by the Valens Clinic for Rheumatism in Valens, Switzerland, showed that topical gel of fresh Arnica montana was a "safe," "well-tolerated" and "effective" treatment of mild to moderate osteoarthritis of the knee when applied daily for 6 weeks. In a study done at the Charite University Medical Center in Berlin, Germany, patients given oral arnica homeopathic supplements showed less inflammation after knee surgery.

    Types

    • Arnica montana is available as a gel, cream, ointment, tincture and globular oral supplement. Arniflora arnica gel contains the homeopathic dose of arnica at 8 percent, which is minute compared to the strength used in some traditions and in the study above on osteoarthritis of the knee. Other topical arnica formulations may contain higher amounts of the active arnica ingredient. Most health food stores and online alternative medicine retailers stock a wide variety of arnica products.

    Warning

    • According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, Arnica montana is generally safe for external use. However, internal use of Arnica montana can cause severe reactions, including fatality, and it should be used only in homeopathic minute diluted forms. Long-term usage of arnica gels topically may in some cases cause skin irritations.
