What is L-Theanine?

L-theanine has been studied since 1949 and is sold as a mood regulator in Japan. Supplements and the availability in tea form within the U.S. are growing as the benefits of L-theanine are recognized. As further research is conducted and clinical trials continue, it is believed that even more health benefits and treatments will come from this unique supplement.
  1. Definition

    • L-theanine is an amino acid that is found in high concentrations in green tea. The L-theanine content in green tea contributes to its unique flavor. It is also found in other teas that come from the same Camellia sinensis plant.

    Types

    • Black, oolong and green teas all come from the same plant. L-theanine can be found in all three of these teas, although it is more concentrated in green tea. It is also available as a supplement.

    Function

    • L-theonine increases the levels of the neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine and GABA in the brain.

    Benefits

    • L-theanine has been clinically proven to promote relaxation, reduce the negative effects of caffeine, alleviate PMS symptoms and reduce stress and anxiety. There are also indications that it can boost the immune system and help to treat such things as Alzheimer's and high blood pressure.

    Warning

    • There are no known side effects to L-theanine. It is, however, suggested that pregnant and breastfeeding women may want to limit their intake as no studies have been done on the effects of L-theanine on developing fetuses or babies.
