Uses of Chasteberry

Chasteberry, also called Chaste Tree, Vitex or Monk's Pepper, is a native plant of the Mediterranean area and Africa. It produces fragrant leaves and flowers. It also has many potential health benefits. Chasteberry received its name after it was habitually used by celibate monks to control and diminish sexual desire.
  1. Menstrual Disorders

    • Chasteberry is used to treat several menstrual conditions, including painful, frequent, infrequent, skipped and absent periods. It helps ease premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). A German study found it more effective than vitamin B6 for PMS symptoms.

    Infertility

    • A 1988 study found chasteberrry helped with infertility in women by treating luteal phase defect, a known and explicit cause of infertility in females. Chasteberry also benefits women with low progesterone levels, thus protecting against miscarriages. In addition, chasteberry increases breast milk.

    Headaches and Colds

    • Headaches and cold symptoms may be helped by taking chasteberry.

    Insomnia and Stress

    • Insomnia sufferers may also benefit from chasteberry. It has been known to offer respite from nervousness, anxiety and stress.

    Acne

    • Acne flareups, especially menstrual-related acne, may be healed with chasteberry. When hormone levels are steadied with the use of chasteberry, skin eruptions may clear up.
