Medicinal Properties of Ginger Root
Ginger root has been used throughout the world for centuries for its medicinal properties and is most noted for its soothing effects on the stomach and ability to alleviate symptoms of nausea and vomiting associated with a wide range of health conditions. Ginger root is a significant herb in both herbal lore and Chinese medicine, and is highly valued in many cultures for its healing properties.-
Benefits
-
Ginger is an anti-bacterial, in which case it can prevent and treat some forms of diarrhea, infections and ulcers. Ginger is also an anti-fungal, which is useful in treating conditions such as athlete's foot, jock itch and ringworm. Used topically for these ailments, ginger will work to improve circulation to the affected area, which can also be helpful in conditions due to poor circulation, such as varicose veins.
Prevention/Solution
-
Ginger root is an excellent remedy for nausea and vomiting. It even reduces the symptoms of morning sickness in pregnant women and is considered safe in doses between 3-5 grams taken for up to four days. Ginger root relieves the symptoms associated with motion sickness as well and is often taken as a preventative when motion sickness may occur.
Effects
-
When ginger root is taken internally, it stimulates the production of enzymes in the pancreas, aids digestion, prevents fermentation and destroys the harmful bacteria in the stomach and intestines that disturb that balance of the natural flora in the digestive tract. Ginger also stimulates blood circulation, which -- combined with the stimulation of the pancreas -- makes it an alternative remedy for easing the symptoms of diabetes.
Considerations
-
Ginger root is an anti-inflammatory herb that can be used both internally and externally for the easing of pain, redness and swelling that can be associated with conditions such as arthritis, varicose veins, headaches and toothaches. Fresh ginger can be chewed on to reduce inflammation and remove harmful bacteria associated with painful dental problems.
Warning
-
Ginger root is effective in treating the symptoms of nausea and vomiting in that can occur in early pregnancy, commonly referred to as morning sickness. It is recommended that women who are pregnant or nursing limit their intake of ginger to three to five grams per day for no more than four consecutive days. However, more research needs to be conducted to determine whether higher doses or longer durations of using ginger during pregnancy can cause significant health risks to either the mother or the unborn child.
