ADHD Herbal Treatments

ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is considered to be a neurobehavioral developmental disorder. It is marked by inattention, impulsive actions and hyperactivity either individually or in combination. It is typically diagnosed in children, though it can be a lifelong affliction. The causes are usually considered to be genetic, environmental or social.

There are, nonetheless, a variety of alternative theories. Treatments typically involve a combination of medications and therapy options. There is some evidence to suggest that stimulant herbal treatments may help to mitigate the condition.
  1. Ginkgo Biloba

    • Ginkgo Biloba, an herbal supplement made from the leaves of the Ginkgo tree, may have a beneficial effect on ADHD. It has a stimulant effect on the brain through increased blood flow, antioxidant effects and glucose metabolism.

    Siberian Ginseng

    • Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus) is not ginseng, but it is made from a similar plant in the same family. It may help to moderate ADHD symptoms through brain stimulation. It also contains a number of eleutherosides which may improve memory.

    Panax Ginseng

    • Panax Ginseng, which is genuine ginseng, is referred to in herbal medicine as an adaptogen, meaning it helps to regulate body functions. It has a stimulant effect on the entire body system, particularly circulation and energy production

    Brahmi

    • Brahmi (Bacopa monniera) is an herb used in Ayurvedic medicine. It is considered a nootropic (a substance that improves cognitive function) and may help to mitigate some of the attention issues associated with ADHD

    Gotu Kola

    • Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica) is an herb that is used in a number of Asian countries for medicinal purposes. There is some evidence that, like Brahmi, it may have some nootropic effects that can help to alleviate the cognitive impairment of ADHD.
