Home Remedies for a Humidity-Related Cough

Because some types of cough are related to humidity, many traditional remedies will only aggravate your condition. For example, steam treatments and humidifiers will only exacerbate a humidity-related cough. While over-the-counter lozenges, syrups, and sprays can alleviate coughing symptoms, they sometimes only mask and suppress your cough while doing nothing to heal your lungs.
Drinking plenty of fluids is one of the surest ways to fight any cough. As a home remedy, certain herbal teas calm inflamed breathing passages and release the mucous in the lungs.

Instructions

    • 1

      Choose your herb.
Both elder and peppermint have a long history of treatment for coughs and colds. Elder flowers and berries clear phlegm from your lungs and alleviate tightness in your chest. Peppermint leaves are considered a cure-all, and many cough medicines use the power of menthol in their formulas.

    • 2

      Boil the water.
Fill your tea kettle with 2 to 3 cups of water. Set the kettle on a burner set to medium-high heat and wait for it come to a boil. The steam will whistle through the spout when the water is ready.

    • 3

      Prepare the tea ball.
While the water is boiling, prepare your chosen herb by placing 1 tsp. of either elder or peppermint into your tea ball. Make sure the ball is securely latched so your herbs don't spill into your cup while they steep.

    • 4

      Steep the herbs.
Pour approximately 1 cup of boiling water over the tea ball. Allow the herbs to steep in the hot water for 5 minutes. To hurry the process along and promote the best infusion of herbs in the water, you can dunk the tea ball several times.

    • 5

      Remove the tea ball.
Remove the tea ball after 5 minutes to avoid too heavy a concentration of the herbs. Drinking herbal tea that is too concentrated can be both unpleasant tasting and dangerous.

    • 6

      Drink the tea.
Drink your tea either hot or cold, as you prefer. Drink it all, though, since you are using it medicinally.
