Herbal Remedies for Restless Leg Syndrome

Restless leg syndrome, or RLS, is a condition that is marked by the urge to move parts of the body, typically the legs. The condition grows worse during periods of inactivity or rest, and movement will alleviate the symptoms temporarily. The sensations associated with the condition include itching, burning and tickling in the muscle tissue. The most common cause of the condition is believed to be iron deficiency, though a number of other conditions and diseases have been associated with RLS, including pregnancy, sleep apnea, diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis. Standard treatments range from anti-convulsants medication, to reduction of caffeine and alcohol intake, to the prescription drug ropinirole. There are herbal remedies and other nonmedication treatments that may help moderate the condition.
  1. Astragalus

    • Astragalus is an herb that is believed to help support circulation (one of the contributing factors for RLS) as well as iron absorption. Both of these properties can help alleviate RLS. Astragalus is available in capsule form.

    Iron Supplements

    • For those with iron deficiency-induced RLS, iron supplementation can alleviate some or even most of the symptoms. Iron supplements are available in tablet form.

    Folic Acid

    • Folic acid, a form of B vitamin, has been reported to help alleviate some of the physical sensations associated with RLS. Folic acid is available in tablet and capsule form.

    Valerian

    • Valerian, or valerian root, is an herb that is believed to have sedative properties that help alleviate stress, sleep disorders and restlessness that may help alleviate RLS symptoms. It is available in capsule form.

    Cardiovascular Exercise

    • Poor circulation is one of the causes indicated in RLS, and regular cardiovascular exercise such as walking, jogging or swimming helps improve overall circulation, which can alleviate some of the RLS symptoms.
