Herbal Remedies for Arthritis

Taking medications to ease the pain and stiffness that you feel in your joints due to arthritis may not be your cup of tea. People who prefer a more natural approach to treat arthritis pain are in luck. According to "Arthritis Today," a publication of the Arthritis Foundation, there are a number of herbal remedies that can relieve the symptoms of arthritis (see Resources).

    • The American College of Rheumatology reminds arthritis sufferers that herbal remedies are not always regulated by the FDA, and their efficacy varies from person to person (see Resources). Be sure to discuss your condition and treatment options with your physician. Most herbs that treat arthritis work similarly and are not meant to all be taken at the same time.

    Ginger

    • Dried or powdered ginger root can relieve joint pain and act an as anti-inflammatory agent for people who have rheumatoid or osteoarthritis. Drink as many as four cups of ginger tea daily or take capsules or extracts three times a day.

    Stinging Nettle

    • Stinging nettle is another herbal remedy that can both relieve pain and reduce inflammation in the joints. Usual dosages for adults are three cups of tea each day or if taking in pill form, no more than 1,300 mg daily.

    Thunder God Vine

    • This Chinese herb suppresses the immune system and reduces inflammation. Use Thunder God Vine to alleviate symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Adults can take 30 mg of the liquid extract each day.

    Devil's Claw

    • Devil's Claw not only treat the pain and inflammation of arthritis but can help reduce the amounts of uric acid in the body (a symptom that causes gout). Some people may find that this herb increases their appetite as well.
