Herbal Remedies for Missed Periods
There are many reasons for missing a period. Some women who exercise intensely on a regular basis may miss their periods. Poor diet, illnesses, certain medications, stress, lack of sleep, obesity or being underweight are all causes of missed periods. If your period is more than 3 months late, you should see a doctor. Menopause and pregnancy will also cause you to miss a period. If you are sure you are not pregnant, there are some herbs that may help the onset of menstruation.-
Teas
-
Herbal teas can be made by steeping 1 tsp dried herbs, or 2 to 3 Tbsp of fresh chopped herbs in boiling or near-boiling water for 15 to 20 minutes. Boiling the water may overwhelm and damage delicate herbs, resulting in decreased effectiveness.
Chamomile
-
Chamomile is known as a tonic for nerves. Stress can be a cause or an effect of missing your period. Relaxing with chamomile tea 2 to 4 times a day should soothe and calm.
Parsley
-
Parsley tea is a folk cure for a missed period. Parsley is an "emmenagogue." An herb that provokes menstruation is known as an emmenagogue. Drink 3 to 4 cups of parsley tea a day to promote menstruation.
Ginger
-
Ginger is a stimulant that increases blood flow. Ginger is warming and may make you sweat while improving circulation. Chop fresh ginger root to make a tea that can be drunk 2 to 4 times a day.
Caution
-
Although the herbs listed here are considered mild, some herbs can be abortifacients. If you suspect pregnancy is the cause of your missed period, herbs should only be taken under consultation with your doctor. Furthermore, some herbs may cause interactions with medication or may pose problems with certain health conditions.
