Herbal Remedies for Coughing

For hundreds of years, people have used herbal remedies for coughing. Most are safe and effective if taken properly and can significantly decrease the urge to cough. It is recommended that you speak with your pediatrician before giving any of these herbal remedies to children. The following herbal remedies for coughing are suggested only for adults and children over the age of twelve.
  1. Steam

    • Mix lemon, eucalyptus and lavender oil with water in a large pot and allow to boil until steaming. Inhale the steam to help break up congestion-causing cough.

    Wild Cherry Bark

    • Take a supplement made of wild cherry bark to sooth coughing. Wild cherry bark can be found at your local health food store as a tincture, in extract form or as a cough syrup.

    Red Clover

    • Eating red clover can clear toxins from the lymphatic system, reducing congestion that causes coughing.

    Marshmallow Root

    • Drink marshmallow root tea to sooth the throat and reduce a dry cough.

    Peppermint

    • Eating natural peppermint or drinking tea made of dried peppermint leaves can suppress the reflex to cough.

    Coltsfoot

    • Taking a supplement of coltsfoot can help reduce congestion and ease cough.

    Thyme

    • Essential oil from thyme is effective in reducing cough. Add several drops to a glass of hot water and drink slowly.
