Osteoporosis Herbal Remedies

Osteoporosis is a bone disease in which the bone mineral density, or BMD, is reduced, which leads to a significant increase in the likelihood of bone fractures. The most common fractures occur in the back and the hips. The most common form of osteoporosis is post-menopausal osteoporosis. The vast majority of osteoporosis sufferers are women. It is typically treated with medication, hormone replacement therapy, dietary changes, and aerobic and resistance exercise. There are a number of herbal remedies that, when paired with dietary changes and exercise, can be helpful in managing osteoporosis.
  1. Black Cohosh

    • Black Cohosh is an herb that helps to regulate estrogen levels. This helps to offset the bone loss that occurs due to post-menopausal estrogen reduction. It is usually taken as a tincture or capsule.

    Flax

    • Flaxseed contains a phytoestrogen (an estrogen-like substance found in plants) that serves to regulate estrogen levels after menopause. For best effects, consume ground flaxseed.

    Red Clover

    • Red Clover contains isoflavones, a substance that acts like estrogen, which helps to regulate estrogen levels post-menopause. It can be taken as a tea, tincture or in capsule form.

    Calcium

    • A large component of osteoporosis stems from calcium deficiency and supplementation of calcium, usually bound with fumarate or aspartate, can help to slow the degenerative process of osteoporosis.

    Magnesium

    • Women suffering from osteoporosis are often magnesium deficient. Supplementing with magnesium can also help to slow the degenerative process associated with osteoporosis by re-establishing normal magnesium levels.
