Skin irritation can be, well, irritating. Many times it is a minor condition; however, it could be something more serious. It can be caused by various sources, such as exposure to an irritant, food allergies, sunburn or insect bites. Other conditions, such as chicken pox, parasites or exposure to chemicals may require medical attention. One of the most common reasons for irritation is dry skin. Apply a cold compress to the irritated area. Many times, this temporarily relieves the itching.

Use herbal remedies for rashes and itchy skin, such as burdock root oil, aloe vera, goldenseal or witch hazel.

Bathe in warm water, not hot, and add evaporated milk, oatmeal or baking soda to help alleviate dry, itchy skin.

Take the sting out of insect bites with baking soda or tea tree oil. It may be applied topically or tossed into cool bath water.

Keep your skin moisturized. Since dry skin is a common skin irritation, lotions, oils or creams may prevent dry, itchy patches.
