Herbal Headache Remedies

Headaches are a common occurrence for many adults and some teenagers. They come in a variety of forms from stress and tension headaches to the most severe form of headache which is a migraine. The causes of headaches can range from stress, insufficient sleep, low blood sugar, caffeine withdrawal, hormonal imbalances and a variety of medical conditions. There are a variety of over-the-counter pain relievers that are used to fight headaches, but herbal remedies offer options with less risk of toxicity.
  1. Prevention/Solution

    • Feverfew is an herb with anti-inflammatory properties (like ibuprofen) that has been used for centuries as a headache remedy. It may also reduce nausea and light sensitivity, common symptoms of migraine.

    • Chamomile tea, while typically used as a sleep aid, also serves as pain reliever and can help to relax the body and control headache pain.

    • Valerian root has a calming effect on the central nervous system and may help to control or even prevent stress related headaches.

    • Peppermint has pain relieving qualities and, when applied directly to skin, can help to reduce pain sensitivity.

    • Ginger is a common herbal remedy for headaches in part because of its anti-inflammatory properties

    • In some cases, caffeine, in the form of coffee or a caffeinated tea, can help to alleviate a headache if ingested at the first signs of pain. In rare cases, it can potentially make a migraine worse.
