Pygeum Side Effects
-
History
-
Pygeum is considered to be an herbal supplement and is sometimes referred to as Pygeum africanum, Prunus Africana or African Plum tree. Various studies cite the possible medical benefits of Pygeum, but the use of the product for medical conditions is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). A majority of the clinical studies have been conducted in Europe, where Pygeum is more commonly administered.
Function
-
Pygeum africanum extract (PAE) has been effective in reducing enlarged prostates (prostatic hypertrophy); acting as an anti-inflammatory to improve the amount of prostatic secretions and subsequently reducing specific hormones that are found in the glandular area. Combined, the two help the body moderate the swelling. Pygeum may also assist in the amplification of bladder flexibility and cell alteration. The improvement of sexual function is attributed to Pygeum's ability to support overall prostate secretion.
Effects
-
Side effects associated with Pygeum mostly occur in the GI (gastrointestinal) area. These include upset stomach, nausea and irritability of the bowels (constipation and/or diarrhea). Symptoms such as difficulty in breathing, tightness in the chest and the onset of skin irritations (rashes, hives, swelling) may be signs of a serious adverse reaction. Seek medical attention immediately if you experience any of the above.
Warning
-
According to nlm.com, pygeum has been effective in decreasing the frequency of urination, urinary hesitancy and the discomfort associated with painful urination. However, it's "unclear how pygeum compares to the effectiveness or safety of other medical therapies, such as prescription drugs, surgical approaches or other herbs/supplements" (nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus).
Prevention/Solution
-
Pygeum should be taken under a doctor's close supervision, as it is not approved by the FDA and can counter the effectiveness of other treatments. Make sure to tell your doctor if you have any preexisting medical conditions (especially prostate cancer, diabetes, liver disease, heart disease or high blood pressure). Also inform your doctor of any prescription medications, supplements, vitamins or over-the-counter remedies that you are taking.
