How to Treat Colds With an Herbal Steam Bath

Steam is an old-fashioned treatment for colds, congestion and coughs. The effectiveness of the steam remedy is increased by adding herbs or essential oils to the water. When the steam is inhaled, the decongestant and antiseptic herbal ingredients go just where they're needed, into irritated and congested sinus passages, throat and lungs.

  • 4 cups water
  • 3 tbsp. dried eucalyptus leaves
  • 2 tbsp. dried thyme leaves
  • 1 tbsp. dried rosemary leaves

Instructions

    • 1

Bring water to a boil in a large saucepan. Remove from heat and add the herbs. Allow the herbs and water to steep for no longer than 5 minutes.

    • 2

Remove pan from stove and pour the water into a heat resistant bowl. Place the filled bowl onto a sturdy table.

    • 3

Place the towel over your head and hold your face at least 12 inches from the water. Use the towel to surround the bowl and keep the steam inside.

    • 4

Breathe in deeply, inhaling the steam. Breathe through your nose if you are suffering from a cold or congestion. Breathe through your mouth if you have a cough. Repeat for 10 to 15 minutes.

    • 5

Strain the herbs and pour the water into a tub full of hot water. Soak in the tub for an additional 10 to 15 minutes.
