Clean your hair regularly. While once a day is not really necessary unless you have very oily hair, washing your hair a few times a week can remove all the oil and dirt that makes hair look dull. Choose the shampoo for your hair type--normal, oily or dry. Wash once and thoroughly rinse. A second washing is usually not necessary. Use warm water, or even cool water if you can stand it.. Hot water dries out the hair, which makes it more prone to breakage.

Deep-condition your hair. After every shampoo, use a conditioner to make the hair more manageable. Once or twice a month, use a protein conditioner. Buy this conditioner from a store or make your own. A hot-oil treatment with olive oil is useful. Another option is to make a conditioner using mayonnaise and egg yolks. The protein coats your hair to make it stronger.

Exfoliate your scalp to get rid of the dead skin cells. There are commercial scalp scrubbers available, or you can make your own. Use a bottle of aspirin and an old toothbrush. The salicylic acid in aspirin is used as an antiseptic and cleaner. Dissolve several tablets in a little bit of water and use the paste to gently scrub the scalp. This removes oil and dirt and unclogs the pores. It also massages the scalp.

Massage the scalp and head to increase circulation and blood flow. This brings more nutrients to the hair follicle, so the hair can grow faster. To massage your scalp, bend over and spread your fingers over the crown of your head. Use gentle, circular motions. You will probably feel your scalp warm a bit and start to tingle. Also massage the back of your neck.

Moisturize the ends of your hair, where breakage starts. To reduce split ends, moisturize the ends of your hair with olive oil or coconut oil. This reduces the dryness that leads to split ends. If the split works its way up the hair shaft, the hair becomes thinner and frizzy and breaks off. To grow longer hair, you have to protect it from unnecessary breakage.
