How to Use Licorice to Treat Ulcers

Licorice contains powerful anti-ulcer compounds, such as glycerrhetinic acid (GA), which offer a wide range of health benefits. For centuries, Eastern and Western herbalists have prescribed this flavorful plant to prevent and treat gastric, oral and duodenal ulcers. Today, clinical studies confirm its formidable anti-ulcer properties.

Use licorice tea to treat stomach ulcers. Roughly chop 1 ounce of whole licorice root into little pieces. Place in a pan and add 1 pint of water. Cover and bring to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer 15 minutes. Strain into a cup and drink 2 to 3 times a day. You may substitute the whole licorice root with 1/2 ounce of dried licorice or 1 teaspoon of powdered licorice.

Use chewable DGL licorice tablets to treat peptic ulcers. Chew one 380mg DGL (De-Glycyrrhizinated Licorice) tablet three times a day, 20 to 30 minutes before a meal or two hours after a meal. Chew another tablet right before bedtime. Chew the tablet thoroughly before you swallow.

Use licorice powder to treat oral ulcers. Mix 5 ounces of DGL (De-Glycyrrhizinated Licorice) powder with half a cup of warm water to form a pasty mouthwash. Swish in your mouth for 2 to 3 minutes, and then spit it out. Repeat three to four times a day.
