How to Use Chamomile to Treat Sleeplessness

Chamomile is a flowering plant grown throughout Europe. It's been used in folk remedies for thousands of years to treat a host of ailments as diverse as stress, sunburns and mouth ulcers. However, one of chamomile's most popular uses is in treating sleeplessness. Chamomile can be brewed into soothing teas, mixed with bathwater or utilized in aromatherapy to relax at the end of the day.

  • Rosemary
  • Lemon verbena leaves
  • Lavender flowers
  • Thyme
  • Coriander seed

  1. Reduce Sleeplessness Through the Use of Chamomile Tea

      Bring 1 cup of water to a rapid boil in a small pot or saucepan.

      Mix in 1 tsp. of dehydrated chamomile flower petals. These can be purchased at herbal supply stores or through specialty Internet retailers. You can also use a tea infuser to combine chamomile flowers with water.

      Reduce the heat to a simmer.

      Cover the pot with a lid to trap the steam inside.

      Boil the mixture of flowers and water for 45 seconds.

      Remove the mixture from the stove.

      Pour the water through a strainer to remove the chamomile leaves.

    Use Chamomile Potpourri to Treat Sleeplessness

      Create a chamomile potpourri by mixing 1 cup of chamomile flowers with 1 cup each of rosemary, lemon verbena leaves and lavender flowers. Add a 1/2 cup of thyme, 1 tsp. of coriander seed, 2 tsp. of orris root powder and 2 drops of lavender oil.

      Place a handful of the mixture under your pillow before going to bed at night. The soothing smells will help you to fall asleep and stay asleep longer.
