History & Philosophy of Holistic Nursing

Holistic nursing is defined as "all nursing practice that has healing the whole person as its goal" (American Holistic Nurses' Association, 1998, Description of Holistic Nursing). In holistic nursing there is a therapeutic connection between the nurse and patient. The practice of holistic nursing includes the interconnectedness of body, mind, emotion, spirit, social/cultural, relationship, context and environment.
  1. History

    • The ancient Greeks used herbs and botanical medicine for centuries. Hippocrates was a physician in ancient Greece who emphasized a holistic approach to medicine. Holistic nursing has been practiced in the Eastern cultures for over 5,000 years. In the 20th century, modern medicine views changed and holistic nursing grew in popularity.

    Caring and Healing

    • One of the main directives of holistic nursing is to bring caring and healing together. Nurses must first learn to love and care for themselves. It is essential that nurses learn to nurture themselves physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

    Physical

    • A holistic nurse learns how to physically care for her and others by looking at the well-being of her body. Making sure her diet is balanced and nutritional is the first step. Exercise and positive movement are important in the daily life of a holistic nurse. Also, resting the body is a requirement. Positive thoughts and emotions are a general practice.

    Mental and Emotional

    • Having a mentality of problem-solving, instead of a "victim" mentality, is important for a holistic nurse. Being able to love her self is important so she can show love towards others. Also, being able to sympathize with others makes a holistic nurse successful.

    Social

    • It is important for a holistic nurse to limit relationships with others to those that are wholesome and fulfilling. Relationships should promote growth and encourage a holistic nurse to set healthy boundaries. Work should be meaningful and rewarding.

    Spiritual

    • A strong connection with God or a higher spiritual being is important in holistic nursing. Meditation and prayer are a daily part of life for a holistic nurse. Respect for all living things is gained from spiritual strength.
