Menopause Products to Keep Cool

Menopause is a natural biological process for women. When a woman does not menstruate for 12 consecutive months, she has reached menopause. To keep cool, or to cool hot flashes, there are a variety of menopause products on the market.
  1. Hot Flashes

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, hot flashes may be caused by the hypothalamus, which is the body's thermostat. A reduction in estrogen may disrupt the function of the hypothalamus; however, the exact cause of hot flashes is unknown.

    Red Clover and Soy

    • Isoflavones found in red clover and soy have estrogen-like compounds and have been used to curb hot flashes. Women in Asian countries, who regularly consume soy, are less likely to be affected by hot flashes.

    Black Cohosh

    • The North American Menopause Society reports that black cohosh has been shown to be safe--over a number of years--for reducing hot flashes. The risk of side effects is low when the herb is used for up to six months.

    Traditional Chinese Medicine

    • Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has used dong quai (Angelica sinensis) for over 1,200 years to treat menopausal symptoms. According to MedlinePlus, dong quai translates as a "return to order" due to its restorative properties.

    Caution

    • The Mayo Clinic recommends taking herbal supplements with caution. Supplements may interact with medications taken for other conditions and may not be as safe or natural as a manufacturer claims.
