Sinus disease affects over 35 million people in the United States, according to Ent-consult.com. People who suffer from sinus disease may find their quality of life impaired by constant headaches, a decrease in mental clarity and severe congestion. There are medications to treat sinus issues, but taking them for extended time periods can have side effects, including an enlarged prostate and high blood pressure, according the Mayo Clinic. Using holistic remedies to treat sinus issues may be beneficial to a person's health and budget.-
Herbal Tea
-
Use herbal tea to help cure sinus issues. Buy an herbal tea that will help open up the sinus cavity, such as peppermint, eucalyptus or lemon leaf tea. Boil water and pour it over one teabag of your choice. Allow the tea to steep for five minutes to achieve optimum results. Sweeten the tea to your taste and then drink slowly, allowing the aroma to reach your nostrils. The warmth of the tea helps to relax the sinuses, opening them up and giving way to drain some of the congestion.
Use herbal tea as a warm compress directly on the face. Brew a cup of hot tea, but only allow the tea bag to steep for 30 seconds. Drain it so it's not dripping. Lie down on your back and place the tea bag directly on your eyes and nose.
Saline Rinse
-
Use a saline rinse to effectively hydrate, cleanse and sooth irritated or inflamed sinuses. Purchase a saline rinse pot (neti pot) from a pharmacy. Mix one cup of warm water with a half teaspoon of sea salt in the saline pot and mix well so all the salt dissolves. Place your head over a sink. Place the saline rinse pot up to a nostril while tilting your head so your nose is parallel with your shoulders. Slowly empty the contents of the saline pot into your nose, allowing it go throughout the sinus cavity. Once the entire pot is emptied, gently blow your nose and repeat on the other side. Do this two to three times a day.
Aromatherapy
-
Use everyday household products to create aromatherapy to cure sinus problems. Use essential oils such as menthol or eucalyptus. Place three to four drops of each oil on your upper chest or lower neck letting the aroma enter your nasal passages. Eat foods such as Tabasco sauce, horseradish, wasabi or chili peppers to open up your sinuses. Buy vapor rub from a pharmacy. Apply it liberally on your chest every two to four hours to maintain substantial amounts of aroma to sooth and calm the sinus cavity.
