How to Give Yourself a Colonic

A colonic is a procedure that works to rid the colon of harmful waste and expel the body of a build-up of toxins and pollutants. Colon cleansing, also called hydrotherapy, has been associated with weight loss, curing health problems related to mineral deficiencies and improved muscle tone in the lower abdomen. While a colonic is most often performed in an alternative medicine clinic, due to the invasive nature of the procedure, many individuals prefer to perform the colonic in the privacy of their own homes. The at-home procedure has been made easier in the past few years due to improved understanding and availability of proper medical equipment.

Familiarize yourself with your irrigation equipment. Practice filling it with water to be sure you understand how to use it. This will also help you to refill it quickly during your colonic session. The insertion tips come in two styles, a straight tube or flared-edge tube, either of which are fine for performing a colonic.

Make you irrigation liquid. Warm water is all you really need, but some may prefer to add vitamins and minerals to the water as well. The 'Salt to Salt' recipe is a simple irrigation water recipe that calls for 1 tablespoon of Epsom salt and 1 tablespoon on baking soda to every quart of water. Another popular recipe is the coffee colonic, which calls for 2 tablespoons of instant coffee to every quart of water. If you're apprehensive about adding your own ingredients, you can simply use warm water or purchase a store bought colon cleanser. See Resources for other irrigation water recipes.

Prepare for your colonic. Fast for 12 hours before performing the procedure, being sure to stay hydrated with water. Drink only water. Try to defecate within the fasting period, but do not force yourself to go.

    • 4

Find a position that is comfortable for you. You may need to experiment with this step. There are three positions most commonly used. You could kneel with your elbows placed on the floor in front of you. You could lie on your left side, or you could rest on your back with your knees bent and your feet planted just below your bottom. The latter 3 positions all work well when performing an at home colonic.

    • 5

Heat your water, homemade irrigation water recipe or store bought colon cleanser so that it is between 100 and 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Fill your enema bag with the water and close the flow clamp. That makes sure the water doesn't come pouring out yet.

    • 6

Perform the colonic. Hang your enema bag over a shower head and get into position inside the bathtub. Insert the tube about two inches inside your rectum and open the flow clamp on the nozzle. Try to cleanse until the bag is empty, but listen to your body. Slight pressure is good, but--if you feel pain or a sensation that you're going to burst--you should evacuate the water immediately.

    • 7

Evacuate the water. Close the flow clamp, remove the tube from your rectum and sit on the toilet until all the water has emptied from your colon. Don't be alarmed by the waste you see in the toilet. This is very normal.

Repeat the process three times in each colonic session. You will be able to fill the colon with more water with each try. Your goal is to be able to completely empty a 2 quart bag into your colon before evacuating.
