Home Colonic Methods

Colonic methods are ways of cleaning out the colon or large intestine. The colon is one of the main organs that helps keep the body clean and free of toxins. The body cleans itself through regular bowel movements. But if constipation or other gastrointestinal problems prevent or delay elimination, these toxins and wastes are reabsorbed by the colon. Keeping the body free of disease by eliminating harmful wastes and toxic substances is one of the main functions of the colon. But sometimes the colon needs help getting rid of fecal matter buildup. Home colonic methods are popular and effective in washing away debris in the colon.
  1. Drink Water

    • One of the best ways to keep the colon clean is by drinking plenty of water or water-based fluids each day. The American Dietetic Association suggests that each adult drink at least 8 to 10 cups of fluid every day. Water adds bulk to fecal matter, making large and loose stools that are easy to pass. The water also helps lubricate the entire digestive tract so foods are better processed as they pass through the body. Water, fruit juices and vegetable juices are all good sources of fluids. But avoid coffee, sodas and alcohol.

    Enema Kits

    • Enemas have been a part of human self-care for centuries. The process literally washes away the fecal matter and other wastes in the colon. There are many home enema kits sold in drug stores. These products contain a bottle filled with water or saline solution. There is a narrow tube attached to the top to insert into the rectum. Once you insert the tube you squeeze the bottle until all the liquid pours into the lower rectum. You then wait for 30 minutes to 1 hour. The water loosens the wastes in the lower intestine to facilitate a bowel movement. Enemas are safe to use if done properly. Be certain to read and follow all the directions on the label to prevent any harm.

    Other Methods

    • There are many types of laxatives and stool softeners on the market. The Mayo Clinic, in its article "Constipation," suggests using these OTC remedies as a treatment for constipation. These products work in different ways but they lead to a bowel movement. There are also herbal colon cleaners on the market. These contain herbs like aloe vera that stimulate muscle contractions in the intestines. This movement helps to push the wastes through the colon and out the rectum. Health food stores sell these products.
