Medicinal Proprieties Found in Flaxseed Oil
Flaxseed has properties that researchers believe promote better health. These include lignin, fiber and the precursors of certain omega-3 fatty acids. Although flaxseed oil is missing the beneficial fiber, it still boasts a healthy amount of omega-3s. Lignins are also stripped away in the oil production process, although they are added back in flaxseed oil brands labeled high lignin. However, whichever brand you consume, preliminary research indicates that flaxseed oil is good for your blood and may have other medicinal properties, as well.-
Cardiovascular Disease
-
Flaxseed oil contains alpha linoleic acid (ALA), which the body converts to omega-3 fatty acids like the healthy ones found in fish. Omega-3s help normalize the heartbeat, lower LCL (bad) cholesterol levels and keep plaque from forming in the arteries.
Inflammation
-
The ALAs in flaxseed oil diminish inflammation associated with certain diseases, such as Parkinson's and asthma. Also, by helping to reduce plaque build-up, flaxseed oil may reduce associated inflammation that can cause heart attacks and strokes.
ADHD
-
Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental disorder that begins in childhood, but affects adults, as well. Although there is insufficient evidence for a conclusive opinion, early research on flaxseed oil suggests there may some benefit and relief for sufferers of ADHD.
Dry Eyes
-
Dry eyes may be caused by aging and changes in hormone production, among other things. Flaxseed oil is currently being used in combination with fish oil in therapeutic drops to alleviate dry eyes and increase tear production.
Dry Skin
-
Flaxseed oil is used in cosmetic preparations, but testing is insufficient to support topical use. Instead, take flaxseed oil internally as a healthy remedy for eczema, dry skin and sun sensitivity.
Fat Loss
-
Flaxseed oil is high in essential fatty acids, which increase the metabolism and help to burn unhealthy body fat. This occurs when the body's brown fat is activated through a process called thermogenesis. Flaxseed oil is a good fat that promotes thermogenesis and benefits weight control programs.
Caveats
-
Whole or ground flaxseeds contain components not present in flaxseed oil. To get the full benefit of flaxseeds, take the entire seed. Flaxseed oil may not be safe to use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Flaxseed oil may increase bleeding in people with severe bleeding disorders. Due to its affect on bleeding, flaxseed oil should not be used within two weeks before or after surgery.
Flaxseed oil may decrease blood pressure to unacceptable levels, particularly when combined with drugs or herbal remedies that have blood-pressure lowering properties. Before you take flaxseed oil, consult your physician. Do not cook with flaxseed oil; high heat turns the oil rancid and it may be harmful.
