The Best Home Remedies for Lice
Head lice, which are parasitic insects, can be found on the scalp, eyebrows, and eyelashes. Head lice are most common among young children. Lice is spread from direct head-to-head contact; however, head lice do not spread disease. Head lice do not hop or fly but crawl. If you or someone you know is infested with head lice, treat them immediately. You can treat head lice with products you may have at home.-
Vinegar
-
Washing hair with vinegar can help get rid of lice but may take 2 or more days. Mix 4 ounces of vinegar and 4 ounces of oil (baby, coconut, or any mineral oil) in a hair applicator bottle for coloring hair. Then apply all over your head. Cover hair with a plastic bag for about an hour. After an hour, rinse out your hair and begin combing out the dead lice with a lice comb.
Tea Tree Oil
-
Mix 10 to 15 drops of tea tree oil with regular shampoo and use daily. It will kill the lice in about 2 to 3 days. Or combine 3 tbsp. olive oil, 1 tbsp. tea tree oil, and 1 tsp. eucalyptus oil with regular shampoo. Apply it to your hair, cover your hair with a plastic bag for about 30 minutes, then rinse. Use mayonnaise as an overnight leave-in conditioner. It may smell funny but will make it easier to remove the lice with a special lice comb.
Antiseptic Mouthwash
-
Some mouthwash contains a mixture of eucalyptus, thymus, menthol, methyl salicylic, and alcohol -- ingredients that kill lice. Pour half the bottle of mouthwash all over your hair. Leave in your hair for about 10 to 20 minutes. Then rinse your hair and remove the dead lice with a lice comb.
Mayonnaise
-
Apply as much mayonnaise as possible to your scalp, cover your hair with a plastic bag, and wait about 2 hours. Also, apply the juice of one whole lemon and 4 tbsp. of unmelted butter to your hair, leave on for about 15 minutes, and rinse. You can then remove dead lice with a lice comb.
Petroleum Jelly
-
Petroleum jelly, similar to the other remedies, has oils that kill lice and make them easy to remove. Apply a handful of petroleum jelly all over your hair and scalp. Then rinse your hair. Since petroleum jelly is thick, add corn flour before washing to help you remove it. After rinsing, remove the dead lice with a lice comb.
