Homeopathic Cure for Fingernail Fungus

Fingernail fungus is a problem that many people deal with at some point in their lives. It usually occurs when a person's immune system is down from an illness. But it is also common among the elderly and is contagious. If you have a fingernail that is thicker than the others and appears to be yellow, brown or black, you may have a case of fingernail fungus. There are many inexpensive ways to treat this problem in the comfort of your own home.
  1. Tea Tree Oil

    • Tea tree oil is a natural fungicide and antiseptic and is very successful at treating and curing fingernail fungus. There are a couple of ways to use it. One is mixing undiluted tea tree oil with the same amount of olive oil and applying it directly to the infected fingernail. The olive oil added to the tea tree oil will prevent any itching that might occur. Another popular method is mixing tea tree oil with lavender oil and applying it to the infected nail with a cotton ball or cotton swab. Mix the tea tree oil with the lavender oil in equal parts. Do this two to three times a day for best results.

    Oregano Essential Oil

    • Oregano essential oil has many helpful properties that aid in fighting fungus. These include anti-bacterial, anti-parasitical, antiviral, analgesic, antiseptic and anti-fungal properties. To use oregano essential oil, mix two drops with 1 tsp. olive oil. Once mixed, apply it directly to the infected nail. Do this daily but do not do for more then three weeks.

    More Aggressive Treatment

    • There is one more method that is a bit more aggressive. Mix vinegar and 3 percent hydrogen peroxide in equal amounts. Soak the infected nail in this mixture until there is no more fizzing. Once you have finished this, soak the infected nail in one cap of liquid bleach mixed with one half glass of water for 30 seconds. After you finish this, rinse with water and dry thoroughly. Then apply petroleum jelly and tea tree oil to the infected nail and cover with an an adhesive bandage for 24 hours. Repeat this process daily for a week for best results.

    Prevention

    • Once you have successfully treated your fingernail fungus, you will want to prevent it from returning. Be aware that fungus does not like the sunlight. Therefore, you might pick up a fingernail or toenail fungus by wearing dirty gloves, socks and shoes that aren't aired out. Also, if you have or have had fingernail fungus, avoid using colored nail polish, because once applied, it encourages the growth of fungus.
