Home Remedy for Infrequent Urination
Infrequent urination may be the result of kidney or bladder problems. It may also be caused by simply not consuming enough fluids. In either case there are home remedies that may address the problem. If urination is not occurring at least twice a day medical treatment should be sought.-
Fluids and Diuretics
-
Infrequent urination may be a sign of dehydration. Eight glasses of water, 8 ounces each, should be consumed each day. The amount of water should be increased if the person is in hot conditions or working strenuously. With much of the body's water being used to cool the body as sweat additional water is needed to accomplish the function of removing toxins from the body.
If enough water is being consumed but urination is still infrequent a diuretic may be required. Diuretics, by definition, are substances that increase the flow of urine. According to Phyllis Balch, author of the book Prescription for Nutritional Healing, birch and dandelion leaves are natural diuretics. Teas made of these leaves provide the body with fluids and help promote the function of the kidneys in producing urine.
Other Remedies
-
According to the Web site Wrongdiagnosis.com chronic kidney disease may be another cause of infrequent urination. A low protein diet is suggested for people with chronic kidney disease by the National Library of Medicine. They also suggest reducing sodium which may lower blood pressure which will help with fluid retention. Potassium should also be reduced or restricted. If the level of potassium in the bloodstream becomes too high, due to lower kidney function and urine output, heart problems may result.
A vitamin supplement may be recommended depending on the diet of the individual and the type of kidney disease involved.
Warnings
-
In cases of kidney failure the amount of fluid the individual can consume will be equivalent to the urine output over a 24 hour period. There are many other considerations to be made when determining the amount of fluid a patient with kidney failure should consume. A doctor should be consulted in these cases.
Urination is the final step of the process of eliminating waste from the body. Infrequent urination may indicate a failure of this process. If improving hydration or taking diuretics does not improve the frequency of urination it may indicate more serious health problems. Medical professionals should be consulted.
