Homeopathic Remedies for Scrotal Tongue

Scrotal tongue, or fissured tongue, is a condition in which the tongue has a cracked surface and edges. Generally not painful, it can become so if food is allowed to accumulate in the cracks and become infected. This malady may be caused by an allergic reaction or systemic yeast infection. It can sometimes be found in people with Down syndrome and Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome, but this is not exclusive.
  1. Related Conditions

    • Scrotal tongue can sometimes be associated with what is known as geographic tongue. In this case, the papillae (taste buds) fall off the tongue in patches, but don't grow back immediately. This leaves red bare patches on the tongue. The papillae grow back, but some will fall off in another area, causing the bare spots to seem to move around on the surface of the tongue. Another related malady is thrush, which is caused by an intestinal yeast infection.

    What You Can Do

    • There are no clear cause-and-effect studies for scrotal tongue. It is considered benign as long as there is no pain. Most doctors will suggest that you brush your tongue frequently to keep bacteria from causing infection in the fissures. If you believe your symptoms are caused by a yeast infection (for example, if you also have symptoms like fatigue, coated tongue and bloating), you can treat the yeast infection to relieve your fissured tongue. In homeopathy, treatment can sometimes take the form of "hair of the dog." In other words, a little Candida albicans (which causes yeast infections), specially formulated by a homeopath practitioner, may help balance the flora in your gut. Cut down on sugar consumption to avoid feeding the yeast, and supplement with Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium to get the best effect. Here are some other remedies to try, which you can order online or find at a health food store:
Arnica helps to soothe inflammation of the mucous membranes. If you believe the scrotal tongue is caused by an allergic reaction, you can try Aresenicum album (derived from arsenic) or sulfuric acid. Pix liquida (pine tar) can help cracked skin. Quicksilver is often used in cases of infection.
