Zicam Problems
Zicam is a line of homeopathic cold and allergy remedies. The products mostly has minor side effects, except for three remedies which were recalled by manufacturer Matrixx Initiatives, after reports of severe side effects.-
Function
-
Zicam cold remedies, but not the allergy remedies, contain zinc gluconate. The product is claimed to decrease the duration and severity of cold symptoms.
FDA Warning
-
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning in June 2009 advising consumers not to use Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs in either adult or child-size, or Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel.
Severe Side Effect
-
The agency received over 130 reports from consumers who had experienced a decreased sense of smell, or a complete loss of smell, after using these products. For some people, the problem was long-lasting or permanent.
Considerations
-
Loss of the sense of smell can be dangerous, as noted by the FDA, because these people cannot smell gas leaks or evidence of fire.
Other Side Effects
-
Oral zinc gluconate products such as those offered by Zicam can cause diarrhea, upset stomach and nausea. Taking the products with food can help. Rarely, some people may experience an allergic reaction to zinc gluconate.
