Nausea Cures
Nausea is the feeling experienced prior to vomiting. It can be caused by a number of diseases and conditions and may stem from different parts of the body, such as the inner ear or gastrointestinal tract. While not usually dangerous in itself, nausea can cause significant discomfort in those afflicted.-
Prescription Drugs
-
One of the most popular prescription nausea drugs is the antihistamine phenergan. Phenergan is used to treat nausea resulting from allergies, motion sickness and other conditions that cause dizziness or lightheadedness in combination with nausea.
Other common prescription anti-emetics include Reglan, Compazine and Tigan. Marinol---a synthetic version of the THC found in marijuana---is sometimes used to treat nausea caused by chemotherapy, as is prescription marijuana in states allowing its use for medical purposes.
Over-the-Counter Medications
-
For motion sickness and allergy-related nausea, antihistamines like Dramamine and Benadryl can be lifesavers. They work by inhibiting the release of histamine---a chemical responsible for the nasty effects of allergies such as nausea and sneezing. Over-the-counter (OTC) antacids like Pepcid, Rolaids and Tums are great for treating nausea caused by acid reflux or indigestion, while loperamide (Imodium) can help calm intestinal spasms related to diarrhea and nausea.
Herbal Remedies
-
On the herbal supplement aisle, you'll find a number of options for treating nausea, many of which are just as effective as prescription and OTC medications.
Ginger is one of the most useful herbal nausea remedies available. According to PubMed.gov, ginger is as effective as Dramamine at alleviating certain types of nausea, often with fewer or less severe side effects.
Peppermint is another great anti-nausea remedy. It works by cooling the stomach and easing spasms in the intestinal tract and can be brewed into tea or inhaled as an essential oil for quick relief. Other popular herbal remedies for nausea include catnip, chamomile, basil and red raspberry leaf.
Lifestyle Modifications
-
Because nausea is often associated with the food we eat, stick to bland foods and smaller meals when possible. Avoid vigorous activity for at least 30 minutes after eating, and consider being tested for food allergies or sensitivities.
Allergic conditions are often at the root of nausea, which is why antihistamines are such effective anti-emetics. Reduce your exposure to mold, pollen, dust and other airborne allergens by keeping a dry, tidy home and avoiding outdoor activity between 5 and 10 a.m., when pollen counts are at their highest.
For those with motion sickness, keeping your eyes on the road when riding in a vehicle can help lessen nausea. Avoid reading or excessive eye movement while on the road, and try to sit as still as possible. Relaxation techniques and acupressure can help reduce nausea associated with anxiety and are effective when used in conjunction with other nausea treatments.
Warning
-
Frequent or severe nausea can be a sign of a more serious condition, so consult a doctor if symptoms persist. If vomiting or diarrhea occurs for longer than two days, seek medical help to avoid dehydration and other serious complications.
