Low Blood Pressure Home Treatments
Low blood pressure is a medical condition also referred to as hypotension. Symptoms of low blood pressure include fatigue, dizziness, blurred vision, leg swelling and thirst. Although you should always speak to your doctor before using any type of treatment for low blood pressure, there are some home methods you can try. A doctor should be consulted because low blood pressure can be the result of a more serious problem like a heart condition, thyroid disorder and dehydration.-
Dietary Changes
-
Increasing the amount of salt in your diet is one method of home treatment for low blood pressure. Salt has the ability to raise blood pressure; this is why hypertension patients are restricted in the amount of salt they can eat. Although salt can be helpful to patients with low blood pressure, the additive should be used in moderation and under the discretion of a physician. Too much salt in the diet can lead to heart issues.
Drinking a lot of water can also help treat low blood pressure, especially if the cause is related to dehydration. Water has the ability to increase blood volume in the body. Dehydrating substances like alcohol should be avoided because they can lower blood pressure. If you do drink, only do so in moderation.
Foods high in carbohydrates also can adversely affect low blood pressure. Hypotension patients should prevent drops in blood pressure by eating small meals frequently throughout the day made up of mostly whole grains, lean proteins, fruits and vegetables.
Compression Stockings
-
Compression stockings are available over the counter at drug stores and can be worn as a home treatment for low blood pressure. Not only can they relieve pain and swelling in the legs, but they prevent blood from pooling in your extremities. Follow your doctor's instructions on how often to wear the stockings to relieve hypotension symptoms.
Changing Body Positions
-
Standing up too quickly after lying down can cause your blood pressure to dramatically drop. To prevent this, take your time getting up by going into a sitting position before standing. Taking deep breaths for a minute or so before you stand also can help. Consider elevating the head of your bed in order to stabilize blood pressure while sleeping.
