Homoepathic Remedy for a Severe Cough

With all the potential symptoms of cold, flu or allergies, there's nothing like a severe cough to get everybody around you asking the question, "Are you sick?" To counteract the extreme energy drain of coughing, you may be tempted to use a quick, over-the-counter medical fix. Homeopathic remedies, however, are more natural and may end up helping the cough more quickly and completely. Here are some homeopathic remedies that can help your severe cough. Consult your physician or homeopathic doctor before trying any new form of treatment.
  1. Soothe the Throat

    • Depending on how much you have been coughing, you may want to stop your sore throat before you treat your cough. This way, the rest of your coughs will be less painful, and it will make things easier on you through the remainder of your recovery. Belladonna is a remedy that is used to treat sore throats that are burning, hot, dry and bright red. Someone who needs Belladonna may have choking spasms and a throbbing headache as well. Mercurius should be used if the throat feels raw, burning and swollen. Some other symptoms for Mercurius may be a large amount of mucus, night sweats and swollen glands. Hepar sulphuris can be used if you have splinter-like throat pains, with blocked hearing and awful-smelling mucus. You may feel chills and a hypersensitivity to pain if you need Hepar sulphuris. Try these at 30c strength (the c stands for one hundred-times potency of its original dilution) if your pain is acute, every hour until you feel less pain.

    Dry or Whooping Cough

    • Here are some remedies to take for your cough, whether or not you decide to take care of the throat pain first. Aconite can be used to stop dry, painful, occasionally violent coughs, which get worse at night and bring on heavy or hoarse sounds. Use Bryonia if there is pain accompanying a harsh, dry cough that improves with cold water and worsens in warm areas. You may be inclined to hold your chest when you cough, and the cough may be a part of bronchitis if you require Bryonia. If your cough is acting more like whooping cough, where your cough may have bloody mucus, nausea and a rattling in the chest, you may need the remedy Ipecac. Note your symptoms and take 30c of the most similar description to your condition every few hours to begin attacking your cough.

    Barking Cough

    • If your cough is less dry and has a sort of barking (mucus-enhanced) sound to it, then try some of these homeopathic remedies. Drosera is used for a recurrent, barking cough that is quite strong and accompanied by choking and retching. As you cough, you may feel the need to hold onto your sides, and there may be a tickling sensation in your throat. Hepar sulphuris calcareum is used for a barking cough that gets worse in the cold, doesn't bring up a lot of mucus, and is accompanied by a rattling in the chest. The mucus, if it is brought up, will be thick and yellow. Spongia can be used for a hollow, painful, barking cough that sounds like the sawing of wood and is often found with a feeling of suffocation in the chest. Similarly to the other homeopathic methods, try using 30c every few hours until the symptoms begin to dissipate.
