Homeopathic Nerve Remedies

Disorders of the nervous system can seriously impact your quality of life. These problems can lead to a lack of sensation in important parts of your body and immense pain in others. If you are just beginning to experience nerve pain, it is important to get it under control early and to give it a complete course of treatment, as there is no quick fix. Consult your doctor before trying any new medications.
  1. Shingles

    • Nerve pain can be caused by a neurological virus like the shingles virus. Also known as herpes zoster, this virus can lay dormant in your nerve cells for years after they cause chicken pox during childhood. The virus then begins to cause blisters and then nerve pain, and if untreated it can spread nervous system troubles throughout the body. Try at least one of the following remedies at the onset of shingles. Use Arsenicum if your blister symptoms seem to get better with heat and worse in the middle of the night. Try Apis if your skin eruptions are accompanied with itching, stinging, and burning sensations that get better in fresh air. If your symptoms are accompanied by stomach pain and nausea, use Iris versicolor. Rhus toxicodendron should be used if you have a rash that includes tiny, red, extremely itchy blisters that are spread out and feel better with hot water. Try a small dose of the most appropriate remedy for your symptoms (6C or so) and only take more if you don't feel any relief within the first few hours. If you feel relief, try taking the same dose the next day (see Resource 1).

    Depression and Anxiety

    • Depression and anxiety medications are often used for neurological disorders to lessen pain and decrease the chances of flare-ups of symptoms during stressful situations. There are many homeopathic remedies that deal with depression and anxiety without the many side effects that come with many prescription medications. Take at least one of these remedies based on your similar symptoms. Pulsatilla can help with irritability and moodiness that gets worse in the evening and with excessive heat. Aurum can be used by those with violent outbursts who contemplate suicide and a have a sense of failure. Gelsemium is used if you have an anticipatory anxiety or fear and you feel paralyzed, weak or dizzy. There are many other homeopathic remedies for depression and anxiety, so if your symptom does not match with one of these, see a homeopathic practitioner for help. If you do match, try a 6C dose and see if your symptoms improve (see Reference 3, Resource 2 and 3).

    Nerve Pain Attacks

    • When you have a strong attack of nerve pain, there are a few homeopathic remedies that can help. You may take a dose as large as 30C up to three times a day if necessary. Arsenicum, as was mentioned earlier, can also help with pains that have a fiery burning and tearing sensation. Cimicifuga should be used if the nerve pain is similar to an electric shock and radiates out from a specific point. Use Colocynthis if your pain is shooting and sharp with lightening quick cramps. Spigella is used if you have sudden painful attacks with stabbing pains and sensitivity to being touched. Use Aconite if the nerve pain is sudden or violent that involves a heavy, numb, tingling sensation. If none of the above symptoms seem to match with what you're experiencing, see a licensed homeopath to help diagnose you (see References 1, 2 and 3).
