Home Remedy for Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis, more commonly known as pink eye, is an infection of the eye. The transparent membrane, known as the conjunctiva, located on the eyeball and the inside of the eyelid become infected due to a bacterial or a viral infection, or an allergic reaction. This reaction causes an inflammation that gives your eyeball and surrounding areas the red or pink, swollen appearance, which also gives pink eye its name.

  1. Home Remedy for Conjunctivitis

    • One of the top recommended home remedies for pink eye is to use chamomile to fight the infection. Boiling chamomile in water and then soaking a towel or cloth for a few minutes to soak up the chamomile will aid in clearing your eye infection. If you do not have fresh chamomile on hand, you can use a tea bag boiled in the water instead --- or even place the tea bag directly onto the eye, once the tea bag has cooled significantly.

      Many herbal tea bags also will work quite well. Simply boil the tea bags, allow them to cool and place them on the infected eye.

    Considerations

    • During treatment, you may need relief from the discomfort. You can soak a wash cloth in warm water, wring out the excess water and place it on your eyes for five to 10 minutes, several times a day.

      You should also keep the area clean. Use a cotton ball or q-tip to several times a day to clean away the crusts that can appear on your eyelid and eye lashes.

      You can also use a mixture of 10 parts water to one part baby shampoo to help with discharge. Baby shampoo is gentle so it won't sting like an anti-bacterial soap would. Using it together with warm water will help clean off the crusts and clean out the gooey discharge that may build up. Cleaning all of this out will help to fight the infection and provide relief.

      If your pink eye does not clear up within a few days to a week, it is important to see a doctor. Your infection can become dangerous and it is vital to your vision and your overall health to get proper antibiotics if your body needs help fighting the infection.
