Home Treatments for Spider Veins
Spider veins are a genetic condition that cause a sunburst pattern of veins to appear under the skin. The veins may be sensitive to the touch and painful in some people. Pregnancy, hormones, heredity and age play a role in spider vein appearance. Spider veins are not the same as varicose veins; however, home treatments for both are similar.-
Home Treatment
-
Wearing an elastic or compression support stocking will treat both spider veins and varicose veins and give more support to the veins.
Reduce salt intake and eat a healthy diet. A low-salt diet will reduce swelling and pressure.
Apply apple cider vinegar to witch hazel with cotton balls to the vein area. Repeat the process daily for a noticeable change in three to four weeks.
Supplements are recommended as home remedies. Horse chestnut seed reduces swelling, pain and fatigue in the legs. This treatment may take up to three months to notice a change. Bilberry extract stimulates and strengthens capillary walls. Butcher's Broom extract works to strengthen veins. Ginko bilboa and grapeseed extracts are known to enhance circulation. Gotu kola works to reduce swelling and water retention. Hawthorn extract contains vitamins and minerals that assist with vein health.
Elevate the legs above the heart if swelling is apparent. This will decrease the swelling and blood in the legs.
Prevention
-
Wearing tight clothing, high heel shoes and crossing the legs while sitting decrease the flow of blood to the legs and put pressure on the veins. Avoid standing for long periods of time as this puts pressure on the leg veins. If standing is required, try to shift the weight from one leg to another ever few minutes while standing. Moderate exercise will increase blood flow and circulation in the legs and aid in vein healing and health. Walking is one of the best exercises for legs and veins.
Surgical Procedure
-
Home remedies do not work for all cases of spider veins and surgery may be the only option available. Laser treatments are the least invasive and will eliminate spider veins on the legs and face. Consult with a physician for the best surgical option based on your case.
