Hyperbaric Healing

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a type of medical treatment that delivers oxygen inside of an enclosed chamber under increased pressure. When you take a hyperbaric treatment, you are enclosed inside this tube-like chamber. The increased pressure allows more oxygen to be dissolved into your bloodstream and body tissues. It causes increased oxygenation in wounded tissue. This is why hyperbaric therapy is used frequently to heal wounds.
  1. Soft Tissue Infections

    • Treat a wound that does not heal due to diabetes or vascular disease by undergoing hyperbaric healing. These infections are often the result of surgery or trauma and do not respond well to traditional treatment. Many of these stubborn bacteria thrive in low-oxygen environments. Undergoing hyperbaric oxygenation can flood your tissues with oxygen that inhibits bacterial growth and destruction of surrounding tissue.

    Anemia

    • Choose hyperbaric oxygen to treat cases of anemia that cannot be treated by blood transfusion. These circumstances could arise if the patient cannot receive blood for a medical or religious reason. While hyperbaric oxygen by itself does not increase the number of blood cells, it can pump more oxygen into the blood for it to be carried throughout the body. This can help keep the patient alive while the body builds more red blood cells.

    Brain Abscess

    • Heal a brain abscess with less risk of damage by adding hyperbaric oxygen to the treatment plan. A brain abscess can be difficult to treat due to antibiotics not being able to cross the blood brain barrier. Procedures to aspirate the fluid from the abscess can result in permanent damage to the surrounding brain tissue. It has been found that hyperbaric oxygen can help kill bacteria by increasing oxygen levels in the abscessed area. It also acts to boost the power of your body's white blood cells so they can work to fight off the infection.

    Procedure

    • Consult with your doctor to work up an optimal treatment plan for your medical condition. A usual treatment schedule requires 30 treatments to be given over several weeks, once a day, five days a week for 90 minutes each session. You will be placed inside a chamber and, once the treatment begins, you will hear oxygen rushing in and you will begin to feel pressure similar to the pressure felt when an airplane takes off. During the treatment, you can watch TV or just rest. A nurse will be available on the other side of the chamber. For safety reasons, you will not be allowed to take any items with you inside of the chamber including jewelry, magazines or contact lenses.
