Homeopathic Remedies

The use of homeopathic remedies is an alternative to conventional medical treatment. A relatively new branch of medicine, it employs a holistic approach to treating symptoms of a condition. Homeopathic remedies are growing in popularity, largely because conventional medical treatment is often unsuccessful the root problem of a condition, not just symptoms.
  1. History

    • Homeopathy---the practice of homeopathic medicine---was first used by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann in Germany in the 18th century. It employs the ancient concept of "like cures like," a concept that is akin to that of vaccination. Its premise is that if a large quantity of a substance causes symptoms in a healthy person, then a very small amount of that same substance will cure a person suffering from those symptoms.

    Theories/Speculation

    • The theories about precisely how homeopathic remedies work are supported by major clinical trials and in practice. Practitioners who use homeopathic remedies believe that that the human body is constantly striving to reach a state of normalcy. It reacts to changes it interprets as "fixable." Homeopathic remedies work by using a very small diluted amount of a substance to stimulate the body's healing mechanisms. The belief is that this will trigger the immune system to attack the disease and the body will return to a normal, healthy condition.

    Procedures

    • Homeopathic medicines are available over the counter, but an evaluation by a certified homeopathy practitioner is recommended before self-medicating. During a homeopathic evaluation, symptoms of a disease are carefully observed and documented, along with details about the overall behavior of the patient. Details about the patient's likes and dislikes, general attitude and personality traits are studied. A homeopath uses these observations to guide the patient in choosing the best remedy and dosage for his particular condition.

    Considerations

    • There is no real scientific evidence that treatment with homeopathic remedies is effective. However, the medical community acknowledges that it is possible that some of these remedies might be helpful and it is generally agreed that they are completely safe. Homeopathy is still a very young branch of medicine. Additional scientific study is needed in order to reconcile conflicting beliefs concerning its effectiveness.

    Benefits

    • Homeopathic remedies are safe products that produce no side effects. The dosages are so small and diluted that they are completely harmless. Also, some feel that the peace of mind associated with using natural substances contributes to a general sense of well-being that helps boost the immune system and enables the body to heal itself.
